Jax is an incredible bruiser in the new League of Legends 2v2 Arena mode. His damage mitigation and crowd control counter many high tier picks — making him a highly contested pick. Abuse his ultimate to single out a target, typically guaranteeing the kill and the match thereafter.
From building him properly, understanding which augments to take, and knowing which champions he doesn’t play well against, Jax takes a strong understanding to master in the new League of Legends Arena mode.

Target bans
- Heimerdinger
- Yorick
- Vayne
These target bans counter Jax pretty hard. Yorick’s walls prevent Jax from being able to keep close in the distance. The bruiser then sends out his minions to shred through Jax’s health.
Meanwhile, Heimerdinger’s turrets can be very tedious for Jax to deal with. But often times, other players do ban out these champions. Vayne can be a very hard counter against Jax, especially if she plays very well. Of course, Jax can burst her down — but this assumes he can pounce on her.
Team synergy
Jax players pretty well with practically every meta pick in the game. In fact, the Jax pick actually puts a lot of team compositions together, since his sustain and crowd control provide incredible value.
Ex: Kayle, Warwick, Sett, Kai’Sa
From hyper carry picks like Kayle or Kai’Sa, Jax plays wonderfully with late game damage monsters. But he’s not limited to just playing with hyper carries. He synergizes wonderfully with other bruisers, such as Sett and Warwick, since they can simply lock down the enemy until death.
Overall, Jax is a pretty versatile pick, and players should definitely learn to play him if they want to master Arena Mode.
Arena Jax Item Build
- Best: Divine Sunderer, Blade of the Ruined King, Death’s Dance, Spear of Shojin
- Situational: Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Plated Steelcaps, Wit’s End, Guardian Angel,
Divine Sunderer is a great item on Jax, since it helps with his health sustain. Players will want to build Jax mostly as a damage dealing bruiser — with defensive items thrown in the mix only when necessary.
Guinsoo’s Rageblade in general is a pretty busted item in the game mode. The increase of on hit effects alongside the attack speed it provides will definitely be nerfed, and Jax plays well with attack speed.
Damage Jax is the way
Some champions benefit from building full tank, such as Maokai and Alistar. Jax is not one of these champions. His play style in Arena Mode works best when dealing as much damage as fast as possible, since that’s the meta of the game mode.
His innate damage mitigation synergizes best with damage rather than defensive items.
Arena Jax Best Augments
Prismatic Tier
- Best: Symphony of War, Omni Soul
- Good: Jeweled Gauntlet, Can’t Touch This, Mad Scientist
Symphony of War is one of the best prismatic augment, since it provides lethal tempo and conqueror’s, two excellent runes on the champion. A second choice would be Omni Soul, since various Dragon Souls synergize with Jax.
If players cannot get either of these two, then just go for any other damage oriented one, Jeweled Gauntlet.
Gold Tier
- Best: Lightning Strikes, Scoped Weapon, Firebrand
- Good: Shrink Ray, Recursion, Extendo-Arm
Lightning Strikes Scoped Weapons, and Firebrand are three of the best augments for Jax within the Gold Tier. Get these whenever possible, since they synergize wonderfully with Arena mode Jax’s kit.
If players don’t have access to it, Shrink Ray, Perseverance, and Extendo-arm are also great options.
Silver Tier
- Best: Light ’em Up!, Deft
- Good: Infernal Soul, Ocean Soul, Typhoon
Light ’em Up! combos way too well with attack speed, which happens to also work excellently with Jax’s kit.
Deft is almost always a good choice as well, especially if Light ’em Up! doesn’t show up.
If the best runes are not available, aim for Infernal Soul, Ocean Soul, and Typhoon.
